KB_17: FAQ: How do I delete an asset?

Question:  How do I delete an asset?

Answer:
There are three approved methods of removing a MicroAgent, or asset record. The first method is the proper way to remove a functioning MicroAgent from a system still in communication with your delegate. Follow these steps to remove the MicroAgent:

1) Log in to Systems Manager.
2) Click the Admin tab.
3) Click the MicroAgent subtab.
4) Point to the MicroAgent menu and choose Remove Agents to display the Remove Agents page.
5) Select the asset(s) from which you want to remove the MicroAgent.
6) Click Apply.

When you remove a MicroAgent using this method, the delegate contacts the MicroAgent on the selected system(s) ,downloads the uninstall script, then executes it. The uninstall script stops the MicroAgent service, then removes the registry settings, and finally removes the install directory containing all of the MicroAgent files within that directory. This method also will remove the Asset record from the database.

The second and most manual method to remove a MicroAgent is via the uninstall executable file. We recommend using this method to remove an unresponsive, inoperative, or obsolete MicroAgent. This method requires direct interface with the asset from which you are removing the MicroAgent. Follow these steps to remove the MicroAgent:
1) On the system with the MicroAgent to be removed, log in to Systems Manager.
2) Click the Admin tab.
3) Click the MicroAgent subtab.
4) Point to the MicroAgent menu and choose Manual Install/Unisntall.
5) Click the MAUninstall.exe to download the MicroAgent uninstaller program.
6) Run the uninstaller.

After the uninstaller removes the MicroAgent from the system, follow these steps to remove the asset:
1) Log in to Systems Manager.
2) Click the Admin tab.
3) Click the MicroAgent subtab.
4) Point to the MicroAgent menu and choose Delete to display the MicroAgents page.
5) Select the assets you want to remove.
6) Click the Delete button.

The third method of removing a MicroAgent is to remove an asset record for a system which has been removed from your inventory.

Note: This method does not remove a MicroAgent from an asset.

Follow these steps to remove an asset record:
1) Log in to Systems Manager.
2) Click the Admin tab.
3) Click the MicroAgent subtab.
4) Point to the MicroAgent menu and choose Delete to display the MicroAgents page.
5) Select the assets you want to remove.
6) Click the Delete button.

When you use this method, Systems Manager removes the asset record for that asset from your inventory. This method assumes that the MicroAgent is gone, it does not attempt to send any uninstall scripts. It only removes the asset record from the database. If you use this method for a system with a functioning MicroAgent installed on it, the Systems Manager restores the asset record the next time that MicroAgent registers.
